Jeffrey Smith is an artist living and working in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. He graduated from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University and has an art practice that focuses on wood and inovative design that reflects his musical and conceptual art background. Weather it is table based on a drum or a drum based on an animal, Smith seeks to make rhythm visual and aesthetics audible. Smith freely crosses the lines between craft and concept to create unique one of a kind functional artworks that breath beauty and energy  into the space they inhabit. Percussion Instruments

This drum (and most drums made by Jeff Smith) is carved from a solid log. The shape of the tree is what gives this drum its unique and beautiful sound. This drum pictured is carved from a 350+ year old eastern hemlock. Called a  tongue drum, it has a maple top and a sheepskin resonator on the bottem. The artist uses all kinds of Nova Scotia wood to make drums of all shapes and sizes. All the drums have a warm, rich, resonant tone. Good for in the studio, on stage, for music parties or for personal meditation and shamonic healing.

While attending N.S.C.A.D.University, Jeffrey Smith studied sculpture(fine woodworking, bronze and aluminum casting and stone carving), drawing, digital sound design, photography, print making and the history of art and architecture. 

Before his studies he worked for five seasons as a tree planter in Nova Scotia. This experience led him to make conservation a principle that guides his art practice. He uses only wood that wood cutters have cut and left for waste. As well he employs recycled construction materials and happily reclaims good wood from old furniture or barns and old houses. He uses all species including spruce and fir and woods like pin cherry and apple. All wood is good wood and can be used to make something beautiful, useful or both.

Each lamp is crafted from  solid wood native to Atlantic Canada and polished to a high finish. Each design is the unique creation of the artist and can be custom ordered in the wood of your choice. As well woodwork can be ordered in a range of dyed finishes. This Lamp pictured is crafted from solid maple and lined with rice paper. It has beauty both in daylight as well as dark.
